One of the latest innovations in medicine that will benefit individuals with mild cognitive impairment is the emerging field of telemedicine.

Telemedicine is beneficial for all, for reasons including national emergency response, widespread geographic availability, immediacy of medical response, and even to save on the costs of gas for visits to the doctor.

Telemedicine is especially beneficial for those with mild cognitive impairment who live alone, those who may be questioning whether driving still makes sense, or who have perhaps stopped driving at all.

Newt Gingrich, Ph.D. and Senator Kent Conrad (D-ND) have been at the forefront of promoting Medicare funded telemedicine. Senator Kent has sponsored legislation to require Medicare to pay for telemedicine consultations. An entire telemedicine industry has emerged, including a professional association.

Telemedicine makes sense to support persons with mild cognitive impairment.

Those of us who love and care for someone with memory loss juggle families, work and life demands, while trying to assist our loved one who needs additional or even substantive time from us for help with bill paying, household management, visits to doctors, beauticians, shopping, etc.

Someone with mild cognitive impairment or short term memory loss may hesitate at asking for help to get to the doctor for a common cold, sinus condition, urinary tract infection, sinusitis, or other relatively minor condition. They may decide to suffer through the condition rather than ask for help to get to the doctor’s office. They might not remember where they have placed the doctors phone number. They might not even remember the doctor’s name. Unfortunately, they may even repeatedly miss doctors appointments, simply because they forget.

Telemedicine is an emerging industry and Medicare may even reimburse for it.

Here at WhatsYourNameAgain?! we believe that Telemedicine is a fantastic resource for those with mild cognitive impairment and memory loss and the people who care for them.
